EU Policy Update - October 2020

5 November 2020

In a nutshell: The European Commission published its 2021 work programme and announced its plans for the Digital Markets Act. The European Parliament adopted all three of its own-initiative reports on the Digital Services Act. Europol published the Internet Organised Crime Threat Assessment for 2020. The Council of the EU agreed on the negotiation mandate on the temporary e-Privacy derogation. The European Data Protection Supervisor issued advice for the EU institutions on complying with Schrems II and issued a decision on Europol’s “big data challenge”. The European Court of Justice held that mass retention of electronic communication metadata is against fundamental rights.

(.ch) Greater privacy and protection against cybercrime

On 18 November 2020, the Federal Council adopted the revision of the Ordinance on Internet Domains (OID). Set to go into effect on 1 January 2021, it offers greater protection of personal data and helps to more effectively combat cybercrime. Read more

 

(.ch) The .ch zone file will be published as open data

The Swiss Federal council adopted the lower laws to the telecommunicaiton act today. Amongst it is the Ordinance on Internet Domains that also regulates the ccTLD .ch. SWITCH-CERT welcomes the new ordinance and the smart regulation by the Federal Office of Communications (OFCOM). The Ordinance on Internet Domains will come to power on 1.1.2021 and has some important changes. Read more

 

(.cz) Need help with accessing public services using MojeID? New videos can provide just that!

CZ.NIC Association, the mojeID service provider, has published six video tutorials that will advise service users on the full process of linking their account to the National Identification Authority (NIA). The videos guide users through all four existing options for securing their account with a security key, as well as the full identity verification procedure. Read more

17 November 2020 marked the beginning of a new cooperation between EURid and the Technological University, Dublin. The cooperation is part of EURid's longstanding commitment to provide higher education courses on cybersecurity and Internet governance topics. Read more

The inaugural meeting of the Dynamic Coalition of Data and Trust was held on 5 November 2020 during IGF 2020. The objective of the dynamic coalition is to explore multiple dimensions of data and trust from the perspective of a wide variety of stakeholders. Read more
