Languages on the move in the Internet landscape
“Only by pursuing a policy of multilingualism in Internet access can we give effect to our policy of an Internet that is truly global, and truly accessible to all,” states European Commission Vice-President, Neelie Kroes, in the foreword of the IDN World Report 2014 produced by EURid with UNESCO in cooperation with Versisign and the country code Top Level Domain regional organisations (CENTR, LACTLD, APTLD and AFTLD).
The annual report is being presented today during a workshop at the Internet Governance Forum in Istanbul, Turkey, which takes place from 2 to 5 September.

Nominet increase security with 2-factor authentication
Nominet is boosting the security of the UK namespace to help protect it from attack and exploitation. As part of this, they will be offering two-factor authentication access to Online Services (OS) to registrars later on this year. Afnic launches a sustainable development initiative
Internet support services such as data hosting, telecommunications infrastructures or the domain name system are key features without which the information society as we know it today would not exist.
That being said, because they are less visible to the general public than web applications, those services are also included in the analysis of the overall ecological footprint of the Internet, its carbon footprint in particular. We know the positive effects of the Internet in the fight against global warming (better remote management of energy costs, the ability to reduce business travelling by using teleconferencing and telecommuting, etc.), but what the internet "costs" in terms of greenhouse gas emissions is less well known.
For that reason, in a spirit of transparency and accountability, and as a benchmark Internet registry, Afnic has decided to assess its carbon footprint. The assessment, carried out with the support of the Versailles-Yvelines Chamber of Commerce and Industry, and the independent EcoAct firm of consultants, consisted first of all in defining the scope to take into account in determining our carbon emissions.

Nominet to begin emailing .uk rights holders

IEDR Announces 2014 Winners of €150,000 OPTIMISE Fund
The IE Domain Registry (IEDR), the managed registry for Ireland’s official Internet address .ie, announced the 15 winners of its OPTIMISE 2014 Fund. The winning companies include micro-enterprises, SMEs, emerging and established companies from the retail, travel, tourism, charity and service sectors.

.SE to release blocked domain names
This autumn, .SE will conduct an auction to release more of the .se domain names that are not currently possible to register. The domain names are two-character country codes, such as no.se, tv.se and pr.se as well as the names of other countries, for example, thailand.se and spanien.se.
.SE is currently planning the auction process and will have more information available autumn 2014.
Policy ushers in new era of choice in .nz
The Domain Name Commission Limited (DNCL) has announce that from 30 September 2014 people will be able to register shorter,
simpler, more representative names immediately before the .nz – as well as the
more familiar-looking options like ‘.co.nz’ and ‘.org.nz’.
