CENTR Releases the Latest TLD Market Report

News 09-12-2024

The Council of European National Top-Level Domain Registries (CENTR) has published the latest edition of its TLD Market Report. This report provides a detailed analysis of the global domain name market, with a strong focus on European country-code domains (ccTLDs). It serves as a key resource for understanding trends in domain registrations and renewals across top-level domains (TLDs).

 Key Highlights:

  • Global Trends: The total number of registered domains across all TLDs is estimated at 372 million, with .com accounting for 43% of the global market. However, .com domains have seen a steady decline, down 2.3% as of July 2024.
  • European Insights: The CENTR30 group of ccTLDs shows slowing growth due to rising deletion rates potentially due to post-pandemic adjustments. Renewal rates peaked in mid-2022 but have gradually declined to 85.9%.
  • Pricing Trends: Initial domain registration prices in Europe have remained stable, averaging under €10, but renewal prices have risen significantly, reaching nearly €17 by late 2024.
  • Domain Usage: High-content domains—those with active websites—now make up 42% of the market, down from 45% in 2021. The share of no-content domains has increased to nearly 30%, indicating changes in how domains are utilized.
  • The report also highlights findings from the recent Renewal Study conducted by CENTR, exploring its implications for registries and offering insights into strategies to enhance domain renewal rates.
