Legal Working Group discusses GDPR implementation and compliance progress
At the 55th Legal & Regulatory workshop in Oxford on , the GDPR was ubiquitous. ccTLD registries are generally well on the way towards compliance, as the results of a recent survey and the discussions showed.
Commonalities and differences with regards to what is being collected for and published on the WHOIS were highlighted in small group discussions. ICANN’s approach towards the GDPR was also addressed. During the Tour de Table, participants shared information about legal cases (content, trademarks, pledged or seized domain names), initiatives to improve data accuracy, national laws impacting them and changes to terms and conditions or registrar agreements. A new trend to use personal blog networks (PBNs) to manipulate Google ranking algorithms and ad networks in order to generate ad revenue was also addressed.
