CENTR has just published its Report on IETF107, which took place virtually from 23-27 March 2020.
The true effect of corona on the DNS
By the CENTR Secretariat - In recent weeks we’ve seen a range of press articles, security blogposts and public statements addressing real or perceived issues with network capacity and the domain name system (DNS) in particular. These range from concerns about the resilience of the DNS with questions on the impact of the number of registrations to news indicating that a tidal wave of fraud and abuse is hitting the world.
Working from home – ergonomics and exercises
By Eva Kram, physiotherapist - As this COVID-19 might force us to work from home for an extended period of time, slouching behind the kitchen table could cause some issues in the long term. Long working hours without enough breaks and in an uncomfortable position might cause lower back issues, tension in the shoulders/neck and headaches. Here are some tips that should help you to reduce the chance of having aches and pains.
EU Policy Update - March 2020
In a nutshell: Before Brussels, along with its institutions, was locked down due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the European Commission managed to issue a few strategic documents on the industrial future (including digital) and the Single Market Enforcement Action Plan. The COVID-19 pandemic resulted in the delay of a number of priority files in the digital sphere, like the Digital Services Act, both on the side of the Commission, as well as the Parliament. Instead, policymakers seem to be pushing the boundaries of Europe's privacy and consumer protection legislation to respond to the pandemic. Meanwhile, the Commission is expected to continue to work on the NIS Directive revision as planned and to come up with a legislative proposal in Q4 2020.
Your domains are safe!
The country code top-level domains (ccTLDs) of Europe are safe. The current increase in traffic to our servers has been small. This is down to technical reasons, as ISPs take the majority of that traffic and so very little trickles down to us. Having said that, even if traffic did increase significantly, like 100 times more, we have the capacity to handle it. Read on to know why and how we achieve this.
Quo vadis DNS: DoT, DoH, DoQ?
By Monika Ermert - eLance journalist - The first meeting of the IETF Adaptive DNS Discovery (ADD) Working Group (WG) was inconclusive. While there is broad agreement that both DNS providers, clients and/or users need resolver choice, the WG looks set to be overtaken by yet another encrypted DNS resolution contender in DNS-over-Quic, or DoQ.
VoIP goes to the web: the allure of HTTP
By Monika Ermert, eLance Journalist - Since the DNS has already shifted into the the web protocol HTTPS (expect a longer blog post here in the next week), IETF engineers are now mulling another web shift. There is a proposal to replace the Voice-over-IP dinosaur protocol SIP by the Realtime Internet Peering for Telephony protocol, RIPT, and finally bring telephony to the net.
Mirja Kuehlewind new Chair of the Internet Architecture Board
By Monika Ermert, eLance Journalist - It is increasingly difficult to accuse the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF) of being an old boys’ club following Mirja Kuehlewind’s stepping up as Chair of the Internet Architecture Board (IAB) in today’s all-virtual plenary. 35-year-old Kuehlewind joins IETF Chair Alissa Cooper, making the top leadership of this standardisation body all-female.
Meet you on the NetStream: IETF with all-virtual agenda in desperate times
CENTR is trying a new format for reporting on the IETF meetings, and will be publishing a series of blog posts over the next couple of weeks, before publishing a full report at the beginning of April. The first blogpost introduces some of the key topics that will be discussed this week.
